Local Conditions

What Makes Landscaping in Pojoaque Different

Every property has its own requirements, but several conditions consistently influence landscaping projects in this part of Northern New Mexico. For landscaping services in Tesuque and neighboring areas, our team of landscape pros knows what will and will not work for the local climate, environment, weather, and lifestyles.

A longer growing season

The local climate supports a wider selection of plants, giving property owners more flexibility when planning their landscapes.

Challenging soil

Caliche and compacted ground can complicate planting and excavation. We evaluate conditions before finalizing project plans.

Wind exposure

Strategic planting, fencing, and courtyard walls can create more sheltered outdoor spaces and improve comfort.

Water availability

Allocation, metering, and water rights can influence plant selection and irrigation design. Establishing these details early helps avoid costly changes.

Varied terrain

Soil depth, slope, and exposure can change significantly from one property to another. We tailor designs to on-site conditions.

Established landscapes

Mature trees and healthy vegetation are valuable assets. Preserving them wherever possible saves money and gives new designs immediate character.

Water

Water Rights, Wells, and Allocation in the Pojoaque Basin

Include water availability in your landscaping plan from the start, especially if your property relies on a well, metered supply, or acequia.

The basin has a complex history of water adjudication and settlement involving pueblos, county, state, and non-pueblo residents. Depending on the property, requirements may include metering, defined allocations, or connections to a regional water system.

We are landscapers, not water attorneys, so we won’t make assumptions about your property’s water rights. Instead, we design around the information you provide and can help you find out who to double-check it with.

Confirm your property's water situation with the appropriate authority before committing to a major project. Bringing that information to your consultation allows us to create a realistic design from the start.

Water-Wise Planting

Water-Wise Landscaping and Planting for the Valley

Once we know your water availability, we can recommend plants and layouts that deliver lasting beauty without unnecessary water use. Xeriscaping offers a practical way to create an established, welcoming landscape while keeping maintenance manageable.

One effective approach with landscaping services in Pojoaque is to divide the property into watering zones:

ZoneApproach
Near the homeDetailed planting and outdoor living areas where irrigation has the greatest impact
Transition areasDrought-tolerant shrubs, grasses, and perennials that need less frequent watering
Property edgesNative ground cover and existing vegetation that can often remain undisturbed

Native plant landscaping can include chamisa, Apache plume, four-wing saltbush, blue grama, penstemon, desert marigold, and native grasses. Piñon, juniper, and established cottonwoods add shade, texture, and regional character.

With a reliable water source, some properties can also support fruit trees and a broader selection of perennials. We prioritize preserving healthy mature trees, which provide benefits that take years to replace. For the full approach, see our Xeriscaping & Desert Landscaping page.

Built Elements

Hardscaping, Fencing, and Outdoor Living

A well-designed landscape should make it easier to enjoy your property. Hardscaping and fencing create comfortable outdoor spaces, define boundaries, and address practical challenges such as wind and uneven terrain.

Hardscaping

Our hardscaping and stonework services include courtyard walls, paver patios, stone walkways, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, and fire pits. We consider sun, wind, access, and drainage when planning each installation, ensuring the finished space is as practical as it is attractive. See Hardscaping & Stonework.

Fencing

Fencing services in Pojoaque, NM can provide privacy, improve security, protect planting, and complement your property’s architecture. Coyote fencing and latilla allow airflow, while cedar offers greater privacy. Stone columns create distinctive entrances, and exclusion fencing protects vulnerable areas from animals. See Fencing Services.

Water Management

Irrigation, Acequias, and Drainage

Irrigation and drainage in Pojoaque, NM is essential to a landscape that stays healthy without wasting water or allowing runoff to damage your property.

For metered or allocated supplies, we focus on

Properties with acequia rights may benefit from a combination of ditch-fed areas for orchards, pasture, or mature trees and drip irrigation for ornamental planting near the home. This is one of the popular landscaping services in Pojoaque that we get requests for from locals.

We install new systems, repair leaks, redesign outdated zones, and provide seasonal startup and winterization. An irrigation audit can also identify wasted water from buried emitters, outdated schedules, or zones serving plants that no longer exist.

Drainage deserves equal attention. Heavy monsoon storms can move water quickly across exposed ground. Grading, swales, French drains, and dry creek beds help direct runoff away from foundations and prevent erosion. See Irrigation & Water Management for the full details.

Ongoing Care

Landscape Maintenance in Pojoaque

Regular maintenance prevents small problems from becoming expensive repairs. Wind can displace gravel, weeds can spread across disturbed soil, and irrigation components can clog or become damaged over time.

Our landscape maintenance services include:

We also help property owners update older installations that no longer suit their needs. Restoring healthy trees and existing planting is often more practical than starting over. See Landscape Maintenance & Restoration.

Before You Build

Permits, Jurisdiction, and Local Requirements

Before starting a landscaping or fencing project, understand which rules apply to your property. Fencing height, structures, setbacks, and water-use requirements can vary by location and governing authority.

Some properties fall under county jurisdiction, while others may be under Pueblo authority or subject to additional subdivision covenants. These requirements can also affect approved materials and project layouts.

Confirm applicable requirements before ordering materials or scheduling installation. Our team can help you explore practical design options and build according to the approved plan. Having a drawing ready for review is often the simplest way to avoid misunderstandings.

Investment

What Landscaping Costs in Pojoaque

Landscaping costs depend on project size, materials, and property conditions. Water availability and ground conditions can also influence the final estimate.

Area treated

The size of the landscaped space and how much existing ground can remain untouched.

Water source and allocation

Different supplies may require different irrigation designs.

Hardscape volume

Patios, retaining walls, and walkways typically represent a larger investment than planting alone.

Caliche and site conditions

Hard ground can increase excavation time, so we test-dig when necessary.

Existing landscape

Preserving mature trees and healthy planting can reduce replacement costs.

Plant size at install

Larger plants create an established appearance sooner but increase upfront costs.

Fencing

Material, linear footage, terrain, and exclusion requirements all affect pricing.

Phasing

Dividing a larger project into stages can spread costs while allowing completed areas to establish.

We provide a free, itemized written estimate after visiting your property. For extensive projects, we’re happy to discuss a phased approach that works with your budget.

I have 10 years of experience as a residential builder and have worked with many landscaping companies/ subcontractors. Evergreen/ Three R are the best I’ve done business with. Renee is extremely knowledgeable about his trade. For detailed design elements I often deferred to his expertise in regards to details which fell within our general layout and the results exceeded our expectations. Don’t be dissuaded by some of the other reviews. It is important to know what you want and to communicate clearly and confirm design features are being implemented during the course of any large project. If that isn’t for you, there are companies which will charge you much more to have a designer (salesman) hold your hand. However, if you approach your project seriously, communicate clearly and listen to the advice of the experts doing the work you will be much happier with the result.

It became clear how much better the yard looked once their landscape lighting was in place. The plants and stone areas have a softer look after sunset.

Yes. We work throughout the area, including Nambé, Cuyamungue, Jacona, Jaconita, El Rancho, and nearby communities. Our Santa Fe team regularly serves the region and can confirm availability for your property.

Your available water helps determine how much irrigated planting is practical and where it should go. We use your property’s allocation to guide plant selection, irrigation design, and the overall landscape plan.

It helps. We recommend confirming your property’s water rights and allocation with the appropriate authority before a major project. Bring that information to your consultation so we can develop a realistic design.

Yes. We can plan ditch-fed areas for orchards, pasture, or mature trees alongside drip irrigation for ornamental planting. Confirm your rights and schedule with your acequia association before beginning work that depends on ditch water.

The longer growing season and lower elevation create opportunities for additional fruit trees, shade trees, and perennials, provided there’s a reliable water source. We still prioritize drought-tolerant varieties for long-term sustainability.

Caliche may be a factor. These hard soil layers can slow digging and increase excavation time. We test-dig when needed so we can identify potential challenges during estimating rather than as unexpected costs during installation.

Possibly. Requirements depend on your property’s jurisdiction and any applicable subdivision covenants. Confirm the relevant rules before ordering materials. We can work with you to build according to the approved plan.

In many cases, yes. Grading, swales, French drains, and dry creek beds can redirect runoff away from foundations and reduce erosion. We assess the source of the problem before recommending a drainage solution.
