Mountain Properties

Full-Service Landscaping for Mountain Properties

A well-designed landscape should complement your home, work with the natural environment, and remain manageable as the seasons change. Evergreen Landscape Pros provides a full range of residential and commercial landscaping solutions so that property owners can address multiple needs with one experienced team.

From initial planning through installation and long-term care, we consider how each element of your landscape works together.

Landscape design and installation

Custom outdoor spaces, planting plans, grading, and landscape renovations.

Irrigation and water management

Hardscaping and stonework

Mountain properties often require a different approach than conventional residential landscapes. Changes in elevation, tree cover, soil conditions, and weather can influence which materials, plants, and installation methods perform best.

That’s why we begin with the property itself rather than a standard design template.

Local Conditions

What Makes Mountain Landscaping Different?

Landscaping in higher-elevation environments requires careful planning. Factors that may have little impact on a conventional suburban yard can significantly affect plant health, drainage, construction, and long-term maintenance.

Understanding these conditions before installation helps prevent costly problems and creates landscapes that are better suited to their surroundings.

Landscape ConsiderationWhat It Means for Your Property
Forested surroundingsTree cover, shade, and accumulated vegetation influence planting decisions and fire mitigation.
Short growing seasonFrost dates and cooler temperatures affect plant selection and installation schedules.
Steep slopesRunoff can move quickly, making erosion control, grading, and soil stabilization important.
Seasonal moistureConsider drainage, ice formation, and moisture retention when choosing materials and layouts.
Wildlife activityLarger animals may require taller, stronger fencing than standard residential options.
Wildfire exposureVegetation management and defensible space can be important parts of responsible property care.

These conditions don’t prevent you from creating a beautiful outdoor space. They simply make proper planning more important.

Fire Mitigation

Defensible Space and Wildfire Mitigation

For properties surrounded by trees or located near undeveloped land, defensible space is an important consideration in landscape planning. Protect your property and define outdoor spaces with dependable landscaping services in Pecos.

Our fencing services, ground clearing, landscape management, and wind and fire protection initiatives can make your property safer. We also offer custom options designed to complement your landscape. Whether you need privacy, clear boundaries, or added wildlife protection, we help you find a practical solution.

Defensible space involves managing vegetation and combustible materials around a structure to help reduce the potential for fire to spread toward the home. It should be designed around the property’s specific conditions, applicable fire guidance, and surrounding vegetation.

What Does Defensible Space Include?

A comprehensive plan may involve:

A mature ponderosa pine tree protected by a rustic wooden fence in a desert landscape in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with a traditional adobe style home and native drought-tolerant plants in the background under a blue sky.

Can Fire-Smart Landscaping Still Look Attractive?

Absolutely. Defensible space doesn’t have to mean removing every plant or turning your yard into a bare clearing. Thoughtful landscaping services in Pecos can help homeowners balance outdoor beauty with property protection. Our defensible space and wildfire mitigation services incorporate strategic vegetation management, xeriscaping, and appropriate landscape materials to support wildfire preparedness while maintaining an attractive, functional outdoor environment.

With thoughtful planning, you can incorporate:

The goal is to balance aesthetics, property use, and responsible vegetation management. Our team can help assess your landscape and identify improvements that align with current local fire guidance.

Water Management

Erosion Control, Runoff, and Drainage Solutions

Water management is one of the most important parts of maintaining a healthy landscape. When runoff isn’t properly controlled, it can wash away soil, damage planting beds, undermine hardscaping, and create drainage problems near foundations.

The right solution depends on where water originates, how quickly it moves, and the surrounding soil conditions.

Common Drainage and Erosion Control Solutions

SolutionPrimary Purpose
GradingDirects surface water away from structures and vulnerable areas.
SwalesSlow and redirect runoff while helping distribute water across the landscape.
French drainsCollect and move subsurface water away from problem areas.
Dry creek bedsProvide a defined route for surface runoff while complementing the landscape.
Retaining wallsSupport elevation changes and create more stable, usable areas.
TerracingBreaks up long slopes and creates level areas for planting or outdoor use.
RevegetationHelps stabilize soil as roots establish and mature.
Why Drainage Should Come Before Landscaping

Installing a patio, planting beds, or other landscape features before addressing an existing drainage issue can lead to avoidable repairs. A well-planned project follows a logical sequence:

Addressing the underlying cause first helps protect your investment and reduces the likelihood of recurring problems.

Southwestern home with a landscaped stone pathway, decorative gravel, native grasses, agave, and colorful drought-tolerant plants against a mountain backdrop.
Plant Selection

Choosing Plants for Higher-Elevation Landscapes

Successful planting begins with understanding the environment in which plants will grow. Temperature, sunlight, soil conditions, moisture, and the length of the growing season all influence plant performance.

Transform an outdated or overgrown yard with comprehensive landscaping services in Pecos. Our landscape design and installation services can incorporate native plant landscaping, hardscaping and stonework, and improved irrigation installation to create a cohesive outdoor space that reflects your preferences and works with the property’s natural conditions.

Rather than treating an entire property as one growing environment, we consider the individual conditions of each planting area.

Native and Climate-Adapted Plants

Mountain grasses

Add texture, movement, and natural ground coverage.

Kinnikinnick

An evergreen groundcover that can work well in appropriate sunny or partially shaded locations.

Rabbitbrush and chamisa

Provide color and structure in suitable sunny areas.

Currant

Offers seasonal interest and can work in appropriate sheltered locations.

Wild rose

Adds natural character and seasonal blooms.

Willow and cottonwood

Existing trees and shrubs along waterways may help stabilize banks and should be considered carefully during landscape planning.

Why Plant Selection Matters

Choosing plants based on appearance alone can lead to disappointing results. A species that thrives in full sun may struggle beneath mature trees, while a plant suited to warmer climates may not tolerate extended freezing temperatures. Our design process considers:

  • Sun exposure and shade patterns.
  • Soil composition and drainage.
  • Cold hardiness and frost exposure.
  • Mature plant size and spacing.
  • Water requirements.
  • Maintenance needs.
  • How the planting will look as it matures.

When Should You Install New Plants?

Spring and fall can both offer opportunities for planting, but timing depends on weather, plant species, and soil conditions. Spring installations must account for late frosts, while fall planting needs enough time for roots to establish before the ground freezes.

Planning around these conditions helps give new plantings a better start.

Structure & Boundaries

Hardscaping, Fencing, and Outdoor Living

Hardscaping adds structure and functionality to outdoor spaces. It can also help manage challenging terrain, create defined areas for different activities, and reduce ongoing maintenance in certain parts of a property.

Hardscaping That Works With the Landscape

Retaining walls

Support elevation changes and create level areas for planting or recreation.

Stone walkways

Improve access and connect different parts of the landscape.

Paver patios

Create durable outdoor living areas for relaxing and entertaining.

Outdoor kitchens

Extend your living space with functional cooking and gathering areas.

Fire features

Add a focal point to outdoor spaces when properly designed and used in accordance with current fire restrictions.

Material selection is especially important in environments that experience freezing temperatures, moisture, and seasonal ice. Proper base preparation, drainage, and installation techniques all contribute to long-term performance.

Fencing for Privacy, Boundaries, and Wildlife

Fencing needs vary depending on the property’s layout, intended use, and wildlife activity.

Fence TypeCommon Applications
Cedar fencingPrivacy, property boundaries, and traditional residential designs.
Coyote fencingRustic aesthetic that complements regional architecture.
Latilla fencingDecorative boundaries and landscape definition.
Stone fencingDurable, natural-looking boundaries and landscape features.
Wildlife exclusion fencingProtects gardens and planted areas from larger animals when properly designed.
Custom fencingSolutions for unusual terrain, access needs, or specific design requirements.

Elk need more than a deer fence

Larger animals such as elk may require taller, stronger fencing than standard deer fencing. Gates and access points should also accommodate maintenance equipment and deliveries.

Plan Multiple Improvements Together

Combining hardscaping, fencing, and landscape installation within one project can help reduce duplicated site preparation and equipment costs. It also lets you position each feature with the others in mind, resulting in a more cohesive finished landscape.

Fire Mitigation

Irrigation Installation and Seasonal Water Management

An effective irrigation system delivers water where it’s needed without wasting resources or creating unnecessary maintenance.

For established native and climate-adapted landscapes, irrigation often plays a greater role during the establishment period than throughout the plant’s entire life. The right system should reflect the plants you’re growing, the available water source, and the property layout.

Why Choose Drip Irrigation?

Drip irrigation delivers water slowly and directly to the root zone, making it useful for planting beds, shrubs, trees, and other targeted applications. Benefits include:

Irrigation Systems Should Match Your Water Source

Water availability and system requirements can vary considerably from one property to another. During planning, we consider:

Property owners who rely on wells, municipal supplies, or irrigation ditches should confirm their available water supply and any applicable usage requirements before installation.

Don't Overlook Winterization

Freezing temperatures can damage irrigation lines, valves, fittings, and other components if water remains in the system. Proper seasonal shutdown may include turning off the water supply, draining or blowing out lines as appropriate for the system, protecting exposed components, checking valves and fittings, and inspecting the system before spring startup. Professional seasonal maintenance helps identify potential issues before they become costly repairs.

Ongoing Care

Landscape Maintenance and Restoration

Landscapes need ongoing attention to stay healthy, attractive, and functional. Seasonal maintenance also helps prevent small issues from developing into larger problems.

Our landscape maintenance services address both your property’s appearance and the practical work required to keep it in good condition.

What's Included in Landscape Maintenance?

ServiceWhat It Accomplishes
Seasonal cleanupRemoves accumulated leaves, branches, and debris.
PruningSupports healthy growth and maintains plant structure.
Weed controlReduces competition and helps prevent weeds from spreading.
Vegetation managementKeeps growth manageable and addresses fuel accumulation where appropriate.
Irrigation maintenancePrepares systems for seasonal use and identifies potential leaks or damage.
Drainage inspectionsHelps identify developing runoff and water-management problems.

Seasonal Care Makes a Difference

Different times of year bring different maintenance priorities. Spring may involve irrigation startup and cleanup, while summer requires attention to plant health and weed growth. Fall is an important time for debris removal, pruning where appropriate, and winter preparation. A consistent maintenance plan can help protect your investment and keep your property looking its best without requiring you to manage every task yourself.

I have 10 years of experience as a residential builder and have worked with many landscaping companies/ subcontractors. Evergreen/ Three R are the best I’ve done business with. Renee is extremely knowledgeable about his trade. For detailed design elements I often deferred to his expertise in regards to details which fell within our general layout and the results exceeded our expectations. Don’t be dissuaded by some of the other reviews. It is important to know what you want and to communicate clearly and confirm design features are being implemented during the course of any large project. If that isn’t for you, there are companies which will charge you much more to have a designer (salesman) hold your hand. However, if you approach your project seriously, communicate clearly and listen to the advice of the experts doing the work you will be much happier with the result.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Evergreen Landscape Pros provides landscape design and installation, irrigation, drainage, hardscaping, stonework, fencing, landscape maintenance, and defensible space services. We also offer landscape restoration for properties that need repairs, updates, or a complete redesign.

Start with drainage, erosion control, and defensible space. These improvements help protect your home, stabilize the landscape, and create a better foundation for future planting and hardscaping. Once you address these needs, you can focus on patios, walkways, gardens, and other decorative features.

Yes. We assess vegetation, combustible materials, tree spacing, and other site conditions to identify opportunities to improve defensible space. Recommendations may include removing dead material, pruning trees, managing vegetation, and using appropriate noncombustible materials near structures. Final plans should align with current guidance from local fire authorities and state forestry resources.

Wood mulch is generally not recommended immediately adjacent to structures in wildfire-prone settings. Gravel, stone, or other appropriate noncombustible materials are often better choices for the area closest to the home. Mulch may be suitable farther away, depending on the landscape design and applicable fire guidance.

Erosion control begins with understanding how water moves across the site. Depending on the conditions, solutions may include grading, swales, French drains, dry creek beds, retaining walls, terracing, and revegetation. The goal is to slow, redirect, or manage runoff while helping stabilize vulnerable soil.

Not necessarily. Elk are taller and heavier than deer and may push against fencing that works for smaller wildlife. Effective exclusion fencing requires appropriate height, strength, and tension. We recommend specifying the fence for the animals you’re trying to exclude rather than relying on a standard deer fence.

Suitable options depend on sunlight, soil, drainage, and exposure, but native and climate-adapted choices may include mountain grasses, kinnikinnick, currant, wild rose, rabbitbrush, and other cold-tolerant species. Plant selection should account for mature size, water needs, and whether the area receives full sun or shade.

The best installation window depends on the plants, materials, and scope of work. Spring projects need to account for late frosts, while fall planting requires sufficient time for roots to establish before freezing conditions arrive. Hardscaping and site preparation may have different scheduling considerations. We plan each project around the work involved and seasonal conditions.

Yes. We design and install drip irrigation systems for planting beds, trees, shrubs, and other areas that benefit from targeted watering. These systems can help reduce water waste by delivering moisture directly to the root zone. We also provide irrigation maintenance, seasonal startup, and winterization.

Pricing depends on the property size, terrain, materials, accessibility, and complexity of the work. Drainage improvements, retaining walls, extensive hardscaping, and wildlife-resistant fencing can influence project costs. We provide a free on-site consultation and an itemized written estimate so you understand the proposed work before committing.

Yes. We can often divide larger projects into manageable stages. We typically recommend prioritizing drainage, erosion control, and other essential improvements before moving on to planting and decorative features. Phased installation allows you to spread costs over time while maintaining a cohesive overall plan.

Yes. Our maintenance services include seasonal cleanup, pruning, weed control, vegetation management, irrigation care, drainage inspections, and landscape restoration. We can discuss a maintenance approach based on your property’s needs and the level of care you prefer.
